Rotherham 3-1 Chesterfield – Match Review

Football - Droylsden v Chesterfield FA Cup Second Round ReplayFootball - Rotherham United v Exeter City Coca

It was a match with so much prospect, but turned out to be a disappointing one for spireites fans who made the train trip to the Don Valley Stadium, and one to forget.

Was it a penalty or a free-kick? Originally the referee awarded a free-kick to Chesterfield for Jamie Green’s fowl on Drew Talbot, but after consulting his lineman he changed his mind and gave a penalty to the dismay of the Rotherham crowd. Spireites top scorer this season Jamie Lowry fired home his 3rd penalty of the campaign to make it 1-0 with 21 minutes gone.

Whatever Rotherham boss and Barnsley target Mark Robins said at half-time worked as the Millers looked a totally different team showing how well they can perform when they feel like it. Just past the hour mark a handball by Gregor Robertson gifted Rotherham a free-kick which was taken by Nicky Law, the shot rebounded of the post and Danny Harrison was there to head home. Then afew minutes later Rotherham goalkeeper Andy Warrington blasted a ball upfield which Adam Le Fondre pounced on and shot firmly in the top corner, a stunning goal from the ex-Rochdale man.

After that goal Chesterfield were slowly deteriorating and late on Kevin Ellison finished to make it 3-1 and confirm the win for a team about to lose their manager. When the full-time whistle went Chesterfield fans booed their teams second half performance, and returned home wondering what happened to the so far excellent spireites.

John Sheridan said after the game:

“I thought for 65 minutes we were very comfortable, we had some great opportunities to kill the game off.” Sheridan continued “We didn’t take our chances and paid the price, we’ve just got to be better.

Mark Robins was obviously deighted:  “I thought the second half performance was magnificent” and he continued  “It hasn’t been an ideal week. I have kept the players informed with what’s happening. They are professional footballers!  Andy Warrington definately kept us in the game”

My prediction was incorrect although when Chesterfield were winning i thought i might of been right. I am happy that Adam Le Fondre scored because i highlighted him as a key player. Donal McDermott came on as a sub and didn’t have enough time to make an impact. Chesterfield really need to pick themselves up from this.
