The pressure continues to mount on Ruben Amorim at Manchester United following their dismal performance vs rivals City last weekend.
The Portuguese coach has struggled to motivate his players this term so far and his side have started poorly in the Premier League as well as in the Carabao Cup.
United have won just one of their four matches in the division so far with two defeats and one draw adding to their stuttering start.
The Red Devils had the opportunity to silence critics on Sunday afternoon by showing up in the derby at the Etihad and putting in at least a performance for fans to cling onto. However they were well beaten by an Erling Haaland inspired City outfit who thrashed them 3-0.
It was a result which leaves Amorim teetering on the brink as fans have began calling for his head, especially given how last season also turned out.
But now talkSPORT claim the 40-year-old gaffer could be in line for what would be a stunning future move that would keep him in work immediately after possibly departing Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim could leave Manchester United for Benfica
The radio outlet claim that Amorim has been sounded out by his old club and rivals Benfica as the Eagles consider a potential succession plan for current boss Bruno Lage.
Joao Noronha Lopes is the main, leading candidate to replace Manuel Rui Costa as Benfica’s next president and talkSPORT claim he is a fan of Amorim and could be willing to move for the manager quickly once, and if, United make their own move.
Lopes was seemingly in attendance at United’s defeat to City alongside vice-president Nuno Gomes and general director, Pedro Ferreira.
Gomes has played with Amorim in a past life during their careers at Benfica and he was recently quizzed on whether or not he could ever work with the coach again.
And he made no apologies for his honest answer.
He said: “Ruben Amorim is the coach of Manchester United, I can’t answer that question. One thing I know, Ruben Amorim will be the coach of Benfica one day.
“Joao has already shown in recent years that he is capable of changing Benfica, to make it greater and different from what it has been in recent years.”
Amorim’s United record makes for grim reading
Any move for Amorim would be a controversial one, you’d suspect, given Sporting CP – Amorim’s former club as a manager – and Benfica are such fierce rivals.
The former midfielder, of course, has crossed the divide previously so perhaps it may not quite be so dramatic.
At Sporting, Amorim succeeded by winning two Primeira Liga titles and three cup trophies. But since then his United form has been miserable.
In 47 matches Amorim has been in charge of, he has lost 20 times.
