Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both reckon Arsenal will fail to win the Premier League title again this season.
The Gunners have finished runners-up in the last three seasons, with Mikel Arteta’s reputation as the league’s nearly-man growing every year.
For pundits Lineker and Shearer, the pair are convinced the Spaniard and his side will come close to lifting the trophy again this term.
However, they both believe Arsenal will struggle to get themselves over the finish line despite recruiting well, including £63.5 million man Viktor Gyokeres.
Why Alan Shearer says Arsenal won’t win Premier League
The Swede opened his scoring account in the Emirates Cup Final vs Athletic Club last weekend after Gyokeres’ quiet Arsenal debut the previous week against Villarreal.
“I think they’ll challenge, I just think they may fall short again,” said Shearer on The Rest is Football podcast.
“I like all of their signings. I think that’s exactly what they needed. And I still don’t think they may be finished yet in terms of bringing players in and certainly players going out.
“I’ve definitely got them in Champions League but I just don’t see them having enough to win the title. Just fall short.”
Gary Lineker thinks Liverpool’s transfer window has been as good as Arsenal’s
Lineker was in agreement but the former Barcelona and England striker noted that the North London giants might have had a better shot at winning the title if rivals Liverpool had not signed as well as they have.
Arne Slot’s Reds have snapped up the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz and Lineker feels those stars could be the difference.
He added: “I think I concur with both of you on that front. I probably wouldn’t have said that if it wasn’t that Liverpool have strengthened so well.
“A lot too will depend on how Gyokeres does. I mean he scored a terrific goal in pre-season but we all know pre-season is not that important. Although, it is for a striker in terms of that feeling of hitting the back of the net.
“So I think a lot will depend on him but we know he’ll get good service. I think they could go close again but I’m going to agree.”
Who have Arsenal signed in the summer transfer window?
Arteta has been busy this window and brought in six signings of his own to combat the challenge of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.
The club have splashed out more than £200m so far on players such as Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke and Christian Norgaard while they could still be more active before the market closes.
Arsenal have been linked with Chelsea’s Freddy Bernal, Rodrygo of Real Madrid, and Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace already this month.
