Talks with the Glazers in the negotiation process which led to Rooney’s agreement to a new five-year contract have included the acceptance by the Glazers to invest heavily in the team to remain successful. Reports are stating that the Glazer family has agreed to give Sir Alex a transfer warchest of £50 million next summer. Moreover, any revenue from sales of players will be added to this amount, unlike what happened with the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid. Ferguson will be encouraged to re-shape his squad and attract top quality talent to Old Trafford next summer, and this will be preceded by a clear-out of fringe players.
Rooney demanded that the club be still competitive when it comes to attracting star names, something which has declined recently with the emergence of Manchester City with their unlimited transfer budget, and with the financial power of Chelsea and Real Madrid. However, Manchester United is known for developing talent rather than buying ready-made players for more expensive transfer fees. Reports are suggesting who the players heading towards the exit door next summer may be. Scholes, Neville and Van der Sar are reportedly set to retire at the end of 2010/11, and United are looking to cash in on Michael Carrick, Wes Brown, Ji-Sung Park and Tomasz Kuszczak. Reports are estimating that the clear-out would result in another £20 million in transfer revenue being added to the £50 million. Unsurprisingly, reports have already started to emerge as to who United may be looking to bring to the club. One particular report is stating that United will acquire Tottenham’s Gareth Bale and Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery, spending all the £50 million budget on them, estimated to be £22 million for Bale and £30 million for Ribery. This is not the first time that United have been linked with these two players.
