Smalling wins it for England Under 21s

The England Under 21 national team had to rely on Chris Smalling to win their games against Romania on Friday 8th October night. The game was played at Carrow Road in England in front of 25749 fans. Smalling, born on the 22nd November, was announced as a Manchester United player on the 26th January 2010, joining from Fulham, but the transfer went through when the summer transfer window opened on the 1st July.

This was Smalling’s first goal for the Under 21s and manager Stuart Pearce breathed a sigh of relief as his team was given an advantage in the qualifying play-off for the Under 21 European Championship against Romania. Henderson scored for England in the 63rd minute, but this was cancelled out by Bertrand’s own goal 7 minutes later. Smalling converted from close range on the 83rd minute for England U21 to win 2-1. Alongside Jonny Evans, Smalling looks set for a place at the heart of the future Manchester United defence. Smalling’s first competitive goal for Manchester United arrived in the Carling Cup match against Scunthorpe on the 23rd September 2010. His potential has been likened to that of Rio Ferdinand, and Manchester United is the right place to be to nurture and build on his talent.
