I know what most fans are thinking Spurs sell Bale and still challenge for the top 4!? I must be living on another planet as Bale’s form last season 21 goals in 33 appearances, has seen him rise to become one of the most wanted players in Europe and arguably the best attacker in the Barclays Premier League. But let’s look at a few facts from last season as to why I have come to this conclusion that spurs can sell Bale and still move forward, first off the main reason Spurs didn’t qualify for the Champions League last season was because of a lack of squad depth and no other reason. Tottenham finished the season 1 point behind Arsenal all be it with a record 72 points but all this without a recognised striker all season, Jermain Defoe starting brightly but fading badly after Christmas and Adebayor who hit the back of the net a meagre four times for the whole campaign although he did show some promise in the last few games.
So why sell Bale? First off you have to ask the question do Spurs have the funds to really mount a serious attempt at landing Champions League football next season, you have to remember as previously stated Spurs reached there record tally of 72 points with no prolific striker and if truth be told very few midfield options both on the field or off it and had key players missing for large parts of the season namely Kabul, Sandro and Scott Parker for the first 4 months yet they still finished with a record number of points? One team spent a fairly large amount of money last season and bought players who would not only improve the squad but more importantly improve the team and that was Man United with the 34 million spent on Shinji Kagawa and Robin Van Persie and what happened they won the league by a land slide 11 points from their nearest rivals Manchester City. So what this tells me is that standards in the Premier League had dipped from previous seasons, how else can you explain Spurs reaching a record 72 points with no striker, very few midfield options and injury problems? To be blunt Tottenham missed a golden opportunity to not only make the top four but keep hold of one of the brightest players in world football and add to him with the funds playing in the Champions League brings.
Because as we’ve seen with the recent managerial comings and goings all the top clubs vying with Spurs for those Champions League spots have realised there mistakes from last season and are preparing to rectify these mistakes, Chelsea with the return of Mourinho are going to spend at least 70 million on a centre back, midfielder and possibly another striker and lets not forget they already have quality few can match with the likes of Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Lampard and Luiz. Manchester City with Manuel Pellergrini about to take over the reigns, will have a 100 million war chest, with the likes of Cavani, Isco and Navas just some of the names the club has been linked to and this added to the quality City already possess, Kompany, Zabaleta, Toure, Silva, Nasri and Aguero need I say more? David Moyes will be out to make a statement as the new Manchester United manager following in the footsteps of Sir Alex Ferguson and the fact that United are defending champions won’t go unnoticed by Moyes, so expect some new faces at Old Trafford with Baines and Fellani expected to follow.
Arsenal have confirmed this summer the financial restraints from previous summers has been lifted because of the move from Highbury to the new Emirates stadium that Wenger had claimed was the reason for his previous lack of spending, this no longer applies and it has been quoted Arsene Wenger has 70 million to spend this summer and he has confirmed he will be spending so again Arsenal can look forward to some big names arriving to add to a squad that finished above Spurs and can boast Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Laurent Koscielny amongst it’s ranks. Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers are improving with some shrewd business already done in January, with the exciting Phillipe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge and regardless of what happens in the latest Luis Suarez saga, Liverpool will be in a similar situation to Spurs they will either have the player or transfer fee so expect a few more additions to continue the revival at Liverpool.
The point I’m making is that Bale on his own and he is a world class talent, can not help Spurs compete with these other clubs unless Tottenham spend big to help him and I’m not sure the Spurs board and Daniel Levy in particular are prepared to spend the money it would take to get Spurs to the level the fans are so desperate for. I’m talking in my opinion it could be as much as 60 million pound and Spurs keep Bale to see them improve on last seasons performances and points tally of 72 points. But if you Sell Bale and cash in on his tremendous talents for the money that’s being talked about and were talking in the region of 50 to 80 million and keep the rest of the squad intact.
Then you have your summer spending spree already paid for and lets be honest without the Bale transfer fee I can’t see Mr Levy spending anywhere near this amount. So if Spurs did sell Bale and received the 50 to 80 million that is being quoted and he were prepared to invest that amount into the playing staff then you could compensate for the loss of Bale. Hamsik, Ozil, Cavani, Iker Gundogan, Reus, Hummels, Isco, Yohan Cabaye, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Cristian Tello and many more would be available if the price was right and for those who say these players would not join Spurs you only need look at the recent Radamel Falcao move to Monaco as a sign players will join most clubs if the money is right and I believe if spurs could sign two or three players of this calibre with the Bale transfer fee then the club would have a better chance of pushing forward and qualifying for the Champions League.
