Starting Drogba a Mistake for Chelsea

Lets face it, Chelsea have not had any problems this season in the goals department scoring 6 at Everton, 4 against Swansea and 3 at Burnley. This flurry of goals by Chelsea has of course been largely down to the signing of Diego Costa who at £32 million looks like one of the best signings in the history of the club.

However against Schalke on wednesday night Jose Mourinho made a mistake in starting Drogba. Mourinho did need to rest Costa, who has seemed to have an injury scare before every game this season. He should have however started Remy who scored not only for France during the international break but also scored his first Chelsea goal against Swansea.

It was clear from his performance that Drogba not up to competitive European or Premier League footballer. His place probably belongs as a early round domestic cup player or just a dressing room/training ground presence. Another thing Drogba’s performance showed was Chelsea do desperately need another striker at Christmas time because having just Remy and Costa is not enough to cope with the demands of four competitions.

It felt as if Mourinho started Drogba for sentimental reasons rather than starting the obvious choice. Which is quite different from the fairly ruthless decisions that Mourinho normally makes.
