The Potters have been handed an unglamourous draw away to League One side Cheltenham Town in the second round of the Carling Cup.
Cheltenham, who are widely tipped to struggle in the lesgue this year secured their birth in the second round with a 1-0 extra time victory away at Southend last night, while Stoke, as a Premier League side are given an automatic bye through the first round.
Stoke’s recent history in the early rounds of the competition that provided the club’s finest hour against lower league opposition is verging on dreadful, with first round exits to Mansfield, Darlington and Rochdale in the last three seasons.
The match will be played in the week beginning August 25th. Â
