Stoke have released their set of squad numbers for the forthcoming Premier League season. All the players that remain at the club from last season retain their numbers, while new signing Dave Kitson has been given his favoured number 12 and his fellow new boys Seyi Olofinjana and Thomas Sorensen have been given the numbers four and 29 respectively.
The four academy players that have been promoted to the first team squad, Marc Grocott, Jimmy Phillips, Tom Thorley and Danzelle St. Louis-Hamilton have been given the numbers 35, 36, 37 and 38 respectively. Interestingly, no squad number appears to have been given to former academy boy Nathaniel Wedderburn despite him being promoted to the first team set up last year. Also, Dominic Matteo has been given the number 16 shirt, despite having been officially released by the club. It has been suggested that Matteo will remain on the books but in a role dominated by coaching rather than playing.
Following the departure of Marlon Broomes to Blackpool, the number three has been left vacant. It is surprising that this space has not been filled by many of the numerous young full backs although this may suggest a new signing in this position is on the way, as happened last year when the number nine shirt was vacated before the arrival of Richard Cresswell.
