With the high class of midfielders in the premiership today, there are many high profile names who claim to be the best and we’ve just listed a few of them. From Valencia to Fabregas we’ve covered them all but who is the best you decide once you’ve read this article.
Antonio Valencia
Our first high class midfielder is Sir Alex Ferguson’s summer signing Antonio Valencia. After several successful seasons at the DW stadium, the United manager-Alex Ferguson snapped up the 24 year old for a price tag of eighteen million. At his short time at the Theatre Of Dreams, Valencia has already set up some excellent goals and hit the back of the net himself.

Paul Scholes
Our second marvellous midfielder is 35 year old Manchester United player Paul Scholes. Scholes, who has played four hundred and eighty nine games for club and country, has been with the reds for nineteen years. Having appeared four hundred and twenty three times for Ferguson, the retired England international has racked up ninety eight goals his side. During his time at the red devils, Scholes has been renowned for his excellent skill and shot accuracy as you can see (below).

Steven Gerrard
With seventy four goals to his name no midfielder list can be with Steven George Gerrard. Gerrard, whos professional career started at the age of seventeen, trained with Liverpool’s youth academy. In the year of 1998, Steven Gerrard signed for the reds and has since appeared three hundred and forty one times and scored seventy four times. After only four caps for the under 21s, Kevin Keegan (England manager at the time) called the Liverpool midfielder at the young age of twenty up for his first team debut.

Cesc Fabregas
When Cesc Fabregas arrived at the emirates, he was an unknown sixteen year old but he soon settled in and has gone on to make two hundred and nineteen appearances for the Gunners. After only two appearances for the Gunners, Fabregas was called up to the Spanish under sixteen squad just before the 2003 under sixteen world cup where he finished top scorer with five goals. After only one hundred and ninety eight appearances, Fabregas was awarded captaincy of the Gunners.

Ryan Giggs
With his 20thPremier League campaign under way, Ryan Giggs is one of the all time Premier League greats with five hundred and seventy league appearances. The retired Welsh international even at 36 still proves his skills by regularly getting onto the score sheet to this day. Giggs, who has appeared six hundred and thirty five times for club and country, received the PFC player of the year for his dedication to the side.

Michael Carrick
Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Michael Carrick has progressed into one of the best midfielders in the premiership. Carrick, who has appeared one hundred and one times for the red devils, has seventeen English caps to his name. During his time at united, Carrick has only scored nine goals but set up many.

Joe Cole
No list can be without one name Joe Cole. At the age of sixteen he was one of the hottest prospects in English football with Manchester United reportedly offering £10 million for him but stayed with his home club West Ham until the age of 21 when he moved fellow London side to Chelsea. Upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge, Cole has made one hundred and fifty eight appearances for the Blues and hit the back of the net twenty six times for the London based club.

Michael Essien
In 2005 an unknown twenty two year old arrived at Stamford Bridge from Olympique Lyonnais called Michael Essien. After sixty eight appearances with Lyon, the Ghanaian international was snapped up by Chelsea for 24.4 million. During his time at Chelsea, Essien has appeared one hundred and twelve times and scored twelve times for the London based side. Having forty five international caps to his name, Essien is eleventh in the most capped players for Ghana.

Abou Diaby
After four successful years at French side Auxerre, Abou Diaby was scouted by Arsenal and given the famous number 2 shirt (the first time since the retirement of Lee Dixon). At his time at the emirates, the French international has appeared seventy two times and scored nine goals for the gunners. After only one game with the French under 21s, Diaby was called up to the first team where he has made two appearances since.

Frank Lampard
With two hundred and ninety five appearances to his name, Frank Lampard is fifth in Chelsea’s all time appearances table. During his time at the Bridge, Lampard has scored one hundred and thirty six goals for the blues. After several successful seasons at West Ham, Lampard earned his first cap for England in 1999 against Belgium. Ten years later and another club later, Lampard earned his seventy sixth cap against Belarus at Wembley on 14th October.
