Atletico Madrid could be one of the busiest La Liga sides in January as Diego Simeone’s team look to keep pace with Barcelona in the title race.
With the window approaching, several rumoured moves have started to gather momentum – and a couple of them could quickly become linked.
Below are three January deals that could happen in La Liga, including two that would directly shape Atletico’s plans.
Marco Asensio from Fenerbahce to Atletico Madrid
Asensio has only been at his current employer, Fenerbahce, since making a summer move from Paris Saint-Germain for a transfer fee in the region of £6.5 million.
Having played out a very successful loan spell with Aston Villa, many expected Asensio to make his move to Villa Park permanent, but it did not end up that way.
However, the three-time Champions League winner has been in stunning form across the 2025/26 Super Lig campaign for Fenerbahce. The Spaniard has found the back of the net eight times and has also contributed five assists in 13 appearances.
He has not yet registered an attacking return in the Europa League, but his domestic form has been outstanding. So why would Fenerbahce allow him to leave so quickly?
As everyone knows, anything can happen in football when money is involved, so if the bid is big enough, we could well see the former Real Madrid man playing for Atletico as soon as next month.
With Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami eyeing both Koke and Antoine Griezmann in January, Atletico may feel they need to plan ahead in case a major exit forces their hand.
Viktor Tsygankov from Girona to Galatasaray
A departure from the Super Lig could, in turn, lead to a notable arrival, with Ukrainian winger Tsygankov linked with a move away from La Liga.
Three goals and two assists in 11 appearances for Girona this season have been among the few bright spots in what has been a difficult 2025/26 campaign.
Only three wins in 17 matches (D6, L8) have left Tsygankov and co looking over their shoulders, and if Girona remain under pressure, interest in their top performers is likely to increase.
With Girona struggling, it would surely take a sizeable fee to see the winger move from Spain to Turkey in January – but if Galatasaray push hard, Girona may face a decision.
Darwin Nunez from Al-Hilal to Atletico Madrid
The January transfer window could be a busy time for everyone associated with Atletico Madrid, especially if Simeone sees a chance to add another forward option.
Asensio’s potential arrival would strengthen Atletico’s attacking department, but there is also reported interest in former Liverpool striker Nunez, who could be on the move again after heading to Saudi Arabia.
Just over £46 million was enough for Liverpool to allow Nunez to depart for Al-Hilal in the summer.
Five goals in 11 matches across all competitions this season have helped him settle quickly, and he is already a popular figure.
However, with Marcos Leonardo also scoring regularly for Al-Hilal this season, only time will tell whether the Saudi side would consider letting Nunez leave – even temporarily – and whether Atletico would be willing to put a deal together.
