What do we know about Chelsea signing Michy Batshuayi?

It was the biggest transfer of the window so far, so what do we know about Michy Batshuayi – the striker they recently signed?

While most are just wondering how the hell you pronounce his name, others are just keen for him to get stuck in at a club that has struggled to fill Didier Drogba’s boots in recent seasons.

The Belgian striker is an excellent prospect, with 26 goals across the last two seasons for former side Marseille. He has also made six appearances and scored three goals for Belgium.

In some circles he has also been likened to Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Drogba. While not as big, he is powerful and has good positional awareness coupled with the ability to link up play effectively.

Having impressed during his time at Standard Liege, the 22-year-old striker has catapulted his game to another level since joining Marseille at the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

Despite the fact that 24 of his 62 Ligue 1 appearances have come from the bench, mostly during his debut season, Batshuayi has still scored 26 goals for the club.

Quick, lively and full of movement, the 22-year-old certainly outperformed Diego Costa in top-flight football last term.

Unless Chelsea make another addition to their strike-force (with both Gonzalo Higuain and Graziano Pelle linked to the club in recent weeks), it seems likely that Batshuayi could play a vital role at Stamford Bridge in the coming season.

Incoming manager Antonio Conte is known to favour hard-working and energetic players that mould their game around the team’s philosophy. It is yet to be seen whether that will mean a defensive approach to games, or if players like Batshuayi and star playmaker Eden Hazard are given the opportunity to express their attacking instincts.
