Your Numbers (Not Quite) Up

New Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has gifted 5 Tottenham players squad numbers, despite the fact former manager Juande Ramos didn’t name any of them in his first team at the start of this season.

Paul Stalteri, Hossam Ghaly, Adel Taarabt, Kevin Prince Boateng and Ricardo Rocha were all handed squad numbers not long after Redknapp arrived at the club, indicating that the new boss see’s a white future for all five.

Earlier this season Ramos told all five of the players that they were excluded from first team training and that none of the five had a Tottenham future. How quickly things change in football…

In my opinion four of the five should have been in the first team under Ramos.

Ricardo Rocha was bought to Tottenham under the reign of Martin Jol for around £3.8 mil. A tough tackling centre-half, Rocha should never have been excluded from the squad as our defence has been very shaky this season. He requested a transfer in May 2008 as he hadn’t broken into the first team. He has been given the number 33 shirt.

Adel Taarabt signed for Spurs in 2007. He has made 8 first team appearences for Spurs and is yet to find the net. However he is only 19 and many at the club were shocked when Ramos dumped him as he has demonstrated some great pieces of skill in the reserves. He will wear the number 19 shirt.

Kevin Prince Boateng was bought for £4.5 mil in 2007. He has played 13 senior games for Spurs, scoring no goals. Fans are split on the player, some see him as a waste of money, others see great potential in the young German. I, for now, am in the latter camp. He’ll wear number 23.

Hossam Ghaly joined Spurs in January 2006 with striker Mido. He has made 21 appearances for Spurs, scoring twice. He was sent out on loan to Derby last season and said at the time how he’d love to move there. He could have a future at Spurs; Harry Redknapp tried to sign him a few months ago whilst manager of Pompey. He’ll wear the number 15.

Out of the five players Paul Stalteri is probably the only one I wouldn’t have rescurected. He joined Tottenham in 2005 and has played for Spurs 42 times, scoring twice. He has also played for Fulham on loan. God knows what Ramos was thinking when he sold Chimbonda and kept Stalteri and then didn’t give him a number! He’ll wear number 13.
