£4m Sharp as a Blade…

Billy Sharp’s late run of form has led to the United supporter to suggest the Bramall Lane dressing room has not ruled out the possibility of promotion as the remarkable turnaround of their season continues.

“Every year. a team always makes a late run for the top six and there is no reason why it can’t be us,” Sharp said in the aftermath of Saturday’s 1-0 win at Barnsley, courtesy of his clinical 77th-minute strike. “I want to keep scoring goals and have a strong finish to the season; we must keep winning and see where that takes us.”

Kevin Blackwell’s predecessor Bryan Robson paid Scunthorpe United £2m to secure Sharp’s services but didn’t see his first United signing score during his reign, as his dream move quickly threatened to turn into a nightmare. However, the current incumbant of the Blades hotseat insists that he would pay even more for a player with Sharp’s obvious qualities.

“The goal was top quality but I know that some people questioned why he had commanded a £2m fee. Well, I would have paid £4m because you need that sort of ability in the penalty-area and you have to pay good money for that quality.

“Billy looks now that he will finish things off if he gets in the right areas and, although he will get the plaudits for his winner, he deserves it after what he has been through this season.”
