How West Ham Can Still Thin Squad Despite Premier League Transfer Window Closing

West Ham are still considering more transfer business despite the Premier League window being closed.

Graham Potter has a somewhat bloated squad and he certainly has to work through trimming the fat.

The Hammers boss has oversaw a miserable start to his side’s season with a heavy defeat to newly promoted Sunderland on the opening day.

Their second outing was not much better after his team was trounced 5-1 on their own patch by Chelsea and then a 3-2 defeat to Wolves in the Carabao Cup after a collapse summed things up.

Jarrod Bowen clashed with Irons fans after that match but his passion seemed to ignite improvement as they won 3-0 away to Nottingham Forest last week.

Guido Rodriguez could leave West Ham

That victory coincided with the end of the transfer window, or the day before, and Potter had work to do. His club brought in €143.8million worth of talent but it was those they failed to ship out who continue to make headlines this week.

According to reports from supposed Hammers insiders, one of those players is Guido Rodriguez.

The Argentine midfielder, 31, was wanted for a summer move with a clear out expected but no serious takers arrived for the player.

That was, outside of the clubs who were alleged to have made official bids for the player in the form of Real Betis and Espanyol.

Publications claimed Rodriguez’s agent knocked both clubs back but West Ham are still seemingly hoping to get some business done for their man who is believed to earn in the region of around £75,000 per week.

Saudi clubs could still come to the table in a late attempt to take the defensive-minded Rodriguez off their hands.

Clubs that could sign Rodriguez with transfer window still open

The cash-rich SPL will have clubs keen to invest in their squads and will see the experienced Argentine as an ideal option for one of their international spots.

Their transfer window also does not close until September 23 but he has turned down a move there in the past.

An alternative to Saudi for Rodriguez would be Mexico who also have the benefit of their window remaining open until September 12. He previously played there with both Club Tijuana and Club America and could be tempted to head back.

Rodriguez joined West Ham back in 2024 and still has until next year on his contract to keep him at the London Stadium. That also always has the possibility of losing the player on a free in January.
