Will Liverpool Sign Marc Guehi in January? Why a Deal Looks Unlikely

Marc Guehi captaining Crystal Palace

Liverpool’s summer transfer pursuit of Marc Guehi ended in frustration, and fans are now asking: will Liverpool sign Guehi in January?

The short answer is no — the Premier League champions have decided they will only return for the Crystal Palace defender once his contract runs down.

Why Liverpool Won’t Bid for Marc Guehi in January

Liverpool had a £35m deal in place for Guehi on deadline day, with the player even completing a medical at Anfield.

But the move collapsed when Palace chairman Steve Parish pulled the plug after failing to secure a replacement.

The 25-year-old England international was left frustrated, having already told Palace he wanted to join Arne Slot’s side. But Liverpool have made it clear they will not revisit the transfer in January.

With Guehi now in the final year of his contract and refusing to extend, the Reds see little value in spending big when they can secure him on a free transfer next summer.

What Happened to the Guehi Transfer on Deadline Day?

Palace had been in talks with Brighton over Igor Julio as a successor, but when West Ham hijacked that deal, Parish had no option but to keep Guehi.

Palace boss Oliver Glasner also opposed selling his captain without a suitable replacement, applying even more pressure to the board to block the move.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes had agreed a £35m fee plus a 10% sell-on clause, but the deal collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Do Liverpool Really Need Another Centre-Back?

Liverpool’s defensive options are already strong. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate remain first-choice, while Joe Gomez stayed despite late interest from AC Milan.

The club also invested £26m in Parma’s 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni, viewed as a long-term project.

However, Konate’s future is up in the air. He has entered the final year of his contract, and talks over an extension have stalled.

Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the Frenchman, and should he depart, Liverpool may need to accelerate their search for a new defender.

Now it seems Konate isn’t the only Premier League defender on Real Madrid’s radar.

Could Real Madrid Beat Liverpool to Guehi?

Liverpool’s decision to wait until next summer creates an opportunity for other clubs. In fact, some believe Real Madrid could target for Guehi if they back away from Konate.

The Spanish giants see the Palace star as a potential low-cost addition who would not count against their non-EU quota due to his Ivorian passport.

This means that if Liverpool delay until next summer, they may face stiff competition from Madrid or even Barcelona.

Will Liverpool Sign Guehi in January? Verdict

As of right now, all signs point to Liverpool not signing Guehi in January.

While he remains a long-term target, the Reds do not want to pay a fee for a player who will be available for free at the end of the season.

The only wildcard is Konate’s future. Liverpool may decide to cash in on Konate before his deal runs out, should he want to leave, and could be forced back into the market earlier than expected.

Until then, Guehi will have to see out his final months at Selhurst Park — and hope that his dream move to Anfield doesn’t slip away.
