Tottenham to Wear Commemorative 1901 FA Cup Kit Against Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur will wear a special commemorative kit for their FA Cup third-round clash with Aston Villa.

The limited-edition shirt pays homage to the club’s first FA Cup triumph, celebrating 125 years since their historic victory in 1901.

Tottenham FA Cup Record

The 1900/01 FA Cup was the first of Tottenham’s eight FA Cup wins – only Arsenal and Manchester United have won more.

But what makes it even more significant is that Spurs became the first, and to this day only, non-league team to lift the trophy, a year after claiming the Southern League title.

To mark the milestone, Tottenham have collaborated with Nike to recreate the kit worn by that pioneering team.

In keeping with the original design, the shirt features an all-lilywhite colour scheme, with the AIA sponsor logo switched from red to white.

Player names are left off on the back, leaving only shirt numbers visible, just as it was in 1901.

The commemorative shirt will be worn by the first team against Aston Villa on Saturday, and only 1,901 shirts will be made available.

Fans can buy the shirt from Saturday morning via the official online club shop, though the price hasn’t been revealed yet.

According to Tottenham’s club website, each shirt comes in a premium presentation pack, complete with player cards, a replica ticket of the 1901 Final, a certificate of authenticity, branded tissue paper, and a wax seal marked “1901”.

Part of the proceeds from the auctioned kits will support the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, which continues its work in local schools and the wider community.

Spurs’ Last Commemorative Kit Against Aston Villa

This won’t be the first time Spurs have marked a special occasion with Villa as the opposition.

Back in the 2007/08 season, Tottenham launched a commemorative kit for a Premier League tie against Aston Villa to mark the club’s 125th anniversary.

The game itself became an instant classic after Spurs fought back from 4-1 down to draw 4-4, with Younes Kaboul scoring the unlikely equaliser.

Spurs Commemorative Shirt Honours Club Legends

The campaign also celebrates some Tottenham legends behind the club’s early success.

Bobby Buckle, the schoolboy who founded the club in 1882, would surely be proud that the team continues to honour their heritage while remaining committed to the local community.

His grandson, Michael Mackman, said, Winning that trophy and overcoming the odds to defeat the best teams in the country at the time was the realisation of the dreams Bobby had for the club over the previous 19 years – he would never have imagined it would be the springboard for the club to reach the heights it would go on to reach.

“Tottenham Hotspur was formed in the community and Bobby would be extremely impressed that the club remains committed to and involved in that same community today.”

Alongside the kit launch, Spurs are running a series of events, including fan photo opportunities with the 1901 FA Cup trophy and pin badges for season ticket holders.

Grassroots clubs in the Tottenham area will also have the chance to feature in The Spurs Legacy Cup, highlighting the link between the club’s history and its local community.

Spurs FA Cup Shirt Inspiration

The commemorative Tottenham shirt features a heritage crest and lilywhite sponsor logos, designed to capture the essence of the original kit.

Accompanying the launch is a campaign film, ‘Carved From Our History’, which showcases a marble relief sculpture of the 1901 shirt.

According to the club, every detail and texture has been meticulously rendered by artist Alasdair Thomson to celebrate the kit’s historical significance.

Duncan Pass, Tottenham’s Merchandise & Licensing Director, said: “To mark 125 years since our groundbreaking FA Cup success in 1901, we wanted to bring this historic achievement to the forefront of popular culture with a truly beautiful shirt.

“Seeing the team step onto the pitch in a shirt inspired by the heroes of yesteryear will capture the imagination of fans, young and old, creating a collectors’ item that will go down in the club’s history.”

Tottenham last won the FA Cup 35 years ago in 1991, so a good cup run would certainly help alleviate some pressure off Thomas Frank, particularly after the debacle around him drinking from an Arsenal cup.

Saturday’s opponents, Villa, have a rich history of their own in the competition, having won it seven times, but haven’t done so since 1957.

Unai Emery is still searching for his first trophy for the club, so it’s expected that both teams will play strong teams in a conscious effort to progress to the fourth round.

The clash kicks off at the unusual time of 5:45PM on Saturday evening.
