Alan Shearer Predicts Another Near-Miss for Arsenal This Season

Alan Shearer on Arsenal and their Champions League chances

Alan Shearer thinks Arsenal will fall just short again in the Champions League.

The Gunners are on their best winning run in the Champions League, having won all seven of their league phase games, scoring 20 goals and conceding just two.

That run includes impressive victories over Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, and now Inter Milan, but Shearer still thinks one team in particular will pip them to win it.

Shearer Predicts PSG Will Stop Arsenal in Champions League

Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring, Petar Sucic briefly equalised for Inter, before Jesus and Viktor Gyokeres netted to secure the victory.

However, Shearer told Amazon Prime Video that he believes PSG will edge Arsenal if the two sides meet in Europe’s premier club competition.

“There is no doubt that this mob tonight, Arsenal, have got a really good chance of being there,” Shearer said.

“But I just think because of what PSG did last year, the players that they have, I’m just going to edge it with PSG. But Arsenal won’t be far away.”

The Newcastle legend added:

“Probably Arsenal. I don’t think so [it would be a 5-0 scoreline]. I think with the confidence and the belief that Arsenal have… they still look a very, very strong team and a team capable of coming and winning here tonight [at Inter].

“That will certainly help them in the moments ahead so, yeah, PSG and Arsenal [as favourites].”

Shearer Backs Arsenal for Premier League Title

While Shearer doubts Arsenal’s chances in Europe, he believes Mikel Arteta’s squad will secure the Premier League. Currently seven points clear of Manchester City and Aston Villa, the Gunners have momentum on their side.

“I think they’ll win the Premier League with the seven-point advantage they’ve got,” Shearer said.

“It was a really good weekend for them with Manchester City and Aston Villa dropping points again. Again, I go back to the squad and how many changes they can make. It doesn’t affect them.

“They’re getting injuries back with Gabriel Jesus and with Kai Havertz as well. And I think defensively… that’s the key for me, that they just don’t give many goals away and they’re so strong at the back.

“So I think they’ll go ahead and they’ll do it.”

Shearer also highlighted the impact of recent signings.

“Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi are very good signings. We’ve already seen Semenyo have an impact albeit not so much at the weekend.

“Their problems are certainly defensively. They definitely needed somebody to help them out in the centre-back position and Guehi is a very good addition.

“They will push them because of their experience but I’m not sure they’ll have enough and Arsenal will take it.”

Can Arsenal Win the Champions League?

It begs the question whether Arteta’s side can sustain both a Premier League title push while also aiming for European glory.

They certainly have the squad depth to do it, but Shearer believes PSG’s experience and quality in the knockout rounds will give them the edge.

Arsenal are in a great position in all four competitions, and domestic silverware is looking likely, but according to Shearer, their first Champions League triumph could still elude them.
