Newcastle United are interested in signing 20-year-old defender Joaquin Seys from Belgian side Club Brugge.
It’s been a hugely difficult time for Newcastle in recent month.
Eddie Howe’s side have been decimated by injuries, particularly at the back.
While Newcastle’s injury updates have been more positive this week, they remain without a number of frontline defenders.
The Magpies are particularly short at left-back, with Lewis Hall the only recognised left-sided fullback available.
Tino Livramento can cover there, but the England international is far more effective in his preferred right-back position.
And with Manchester United interested in Livramento, his long-term future is far from guaranteed.
As a result, Eddie Howe is keen to bring another left-back to St. James’ Park.
And it now appears that the club have identified their top target in that area.
Newcastle United Keen On Sining Joaquin Seys
Multiple sources have now suggested that Newcastle are eyeing up Belgian defender Joaquin Seys.
The 20-year-old fullback has won two caps for Belgium, and made 73 senior appearances for Club Brugge.
He has impressed so far this season, performing especially well in the UEFA Champions League.
In my opinion Joaquin Seys is our best defender in this game, might not provide as much on the attack as De Cuyper, but definitely not a bad performance for your first start for your national team.#KAZBEL pic.twitter.com/65UNzGcMbz

In Europe, he has managed two assists in six appearances this season, and caught the eyes of many.
Although a left-back, he is able to cover the right-hand side – an ability Eddie Howe is particularly keen on.
Seys has occasionally been deployed in a more advanced role on the left, suggesting he is also capable in a wing-back role if Howe ever required it of him.
And at just 20, he represents a superb long-term option for Newcastle, one that could develop into a world-class operator in the years to come.
Newcastle’s Transfer Window Is Turning Into A Disappointment
The problem for Newcastle is that Brugge have little intention of selling Seys in January.
They are fighting for the title in the Belgian Pro League, and remain in contention for the Champions League play-off round.
As a result, prising him away from his current club mid-season may prove too expensive.
It will take an almighty offer to tempt Brugge into letting one of their brightest young talents leave.
✨️ Joaquin Seys vs Rangers:
• 91% accurate passing
• 4(!) Key passes
• 100% accurate crosses
• 2/4 accurate long balls
• 3/4 ground duels won
• 2/3 aerial duels won
• 100% succesful dribbles
• 4 clearances
• 1 interception#Clubbrugge pic.twitter.com/NaS4qVJEzU— Boerenverstand (@TBNH1891) August 20, 2025
And with the window closing in less that two weeks, there is little time for the Belgian outfit to acquire a replacement.
This makes a January deal increasingly unlikely, and leaves Newcastle fans faced with a disappointingly familiar situation.
It’s been a window to forget for the Toon Army, who have seen their side linked to countless players, with little success.
There is an increasing belief among supporters that they will have to put up with the same struggling squad for the remainder of another lacklustre campaign.
