How Barcelona Can Secure Direct Qualification for the Champions League Round of 16

Barcelona

Barcelona host FC Copenhagen at Camp Nou in their final UEFA Champions League league-phase match on Wednesday night.

The Blaugrana are in ninth place in the Champions League table with 13 points to their name. Barcelona need to finish in the top eight to qualify directly for the Champions League Round of 16. If they finish anywhere between ninth and 24th, they will have to gamble it all in a two-legged play-off in February.

Barcelona are also alive in the Copa del Rey and only have a one-point lead at the top of the LaLiga table. Hansi Flick would love to avoid adding two more fixtures to Barca’s already packed calendar.

Eight Teams Deadlocked Ahead of Final Champions League League-Phase Matchday

Heading into the final Champions League Matchday, a whopping eight teams are standing on 13 points, with only goal difference separating them.

Reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain are leading the pack with a goal difference of +10 and 20 goals scored. Newcastle United are also at +10 but have scored four fewer goals than PSG. Then there are Chelsea (+6), Barcelona (+5), Sporting CP (+5), Manchester City (+4), Atletico Madrid (+3), and Atalanta (+1).

Team P GF GA GD Pts
PSG 7 20 10 +10 13
Newcastle 7 16 6 +10 13
Chelsea 7 14 8 +6 13
Barcelona 7 18 13 +5 13
Sporting 7 14 9 +5 13
Man City 7 13 9 +4 13
Atlético Madrid 7 16 13 +3 13
Atalanta 7 10 9 +1 13

With Arsenal (21 points) and Bayern Munich (18 points) already in the final eight, six places are up for grabs. But if Real Madrid (15 points), Liverpool (15 points), and Tottenham Hotspur (14 points) win on Wednesday, only three more teams would secure automatic qualification for the Round of 16.

Hansi Flick admits Barcelona need to be at their best in their battle against Copenhagen. Winning is the bare minimum for the Spanish champions. They need to make a statement to qualify directly for the knockout phase of the Champions League.

How Can Barcelona Qualify for Champions League Round of 16

With eight teams deadlocked at 13 points, Barcelona have very little room for error. A draw or defeat would make them vulnerable to those sitting below.

It all boils down to how significant a victory Barcelona can achieve on the night.

Goal Difference to Be Key

Barcelona have a goal difference of +5. PSG, Newcastle United, and Chelsea are ahead of the Blaugrana, with the former two level on +10 and the Blues on +6. Then there are Sporting CP (+5), Manchester City (+4), and Atletico Madrid (+3), who could catch Barcelona with sizable victories on Wednesday.

So, to give themselves the best chance to progress, Barcelona must play an ultra-offensive game.

They cannot manage the game or take their foot off the gas. Copenhagen, who sit in the 26th place and are eyeing a play-off spot, will not make it easy for the Catalans.

Fortunately, Barcelona have received an injury boost ahead of the game, which should help them be at their explosive best.

Finishing with the highest goal difference is not a practical objective for Barcelona, as PSG and Newcastle have a significant advantage. However, they can try to outscore Chelsea by two goals to take their spot in the table.

Key Fixtures Barcelona Must Keep an Eye On

Luckily for Barcelona, PSG and Newcastle United will face off in the final league-phase Matchday.

It guarantees that at least one team will drop points and allow Flick’s Barca to take their place. A draw would be even better for the Catalans, as they would leapfrog both teams with a victory over Copenhagen.

Since the game is at the Parc des Princes and PSG have an impressive home record in Europe, the Parisians are heavily favoured to get the win over Newcastle on Wednesday night.

Other key fixtures for Eintracht Frankfurt vs Tottenham, Napoli vs Chelsea, Athletic Club vs Sporting CP, and Manchester City vs Galatasaray.

None of the fixtures suggests a comfortable win for the four teams in contention for the last eight. While Tottenham, Chelsea, and Sporting are away from home, Man City’s recent wobbles would encourage Galatasaray to try their luck at the Etihad Stadium.
