Manchester United have confirmed a new role for Darren Fletcher after the Scotsman’s brief spell as interim manager, as part of wider changes to the club’s academy.
Fletcher recently stepped up from his role as United’s Under 18s lead coach to take temporary charge of the senior team, before handing the reins to former teammate Michael Carrick earlier this month.
After his brief spell in the spotlight, United have confirmed the Scotsman will return to his previous role at the club.
However, United say they have also given Fletcher additional duties in the club’s youth set-up. As well as his role with the Under-18s, the 41-year-old will also lead the Professional Development Phase for the remainder of the season.
The development phase consists of United youngsters between the ages of 17 and 21.
The 41-year-old managed the Red Devils to a draw against relegation candidates Burnley and defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup, which ensured this season will be United’s shortest since 1915.
However, despite this unwanted record, United have placed the experienced midfielder back in the youth ranks in the hopes Fletcher can continue to have a positive influence on the club’s youngsters.
Man United hire new Under 21s boss
In addition to Fletcher’s extra duties, the club have also hired Adam Lawrence as Under 21s manager.
Lawrence had previously taken charge of United’s Under-18s side, leading the young Red Devils to the national title in 2023/24, as well as the Premier League Cup, before taking up a role at Newcastle United.
The Under-21s post had been vacant since Travis Binnion was promoted to the first-team coaching set-up earlier this month.
Manchester United’s incredible youth record
Despite the troubles facing the senior team in recent years, United certainly get things right when it comes to developing their young players.
Whilst not all youngsters make the grade at United, the Red Devils have an incredible record of having a homegrown player feature in every matchday squad for over 4,000 consecutive games.
It’s a run that has been going for 88 years, and started on 30 October 1937 during an away game at Fulham.
The Cottagers are the next opponents at Old Trafford as Michael Carrick looks to land the permanent job at United with a third consecutive victory.
