Juventus loanee Nicolas Gonzalez has become an important member of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid this season.
However, his growing prominence has left Los Rojiblancos in an awkward situation.
Atletico Madrid Face Nicolas Gonzalez Dilemma
Atletico Madrid signed Nicolas Gonzalez from Serie A side Juventus on a season-long loan in September 2025.
In a departure from norms, Diego Simeone quickly placed his trust in the player and gave him a place in the starting XI in his first outing at the Metropolitano.
Gonzalez made his coach proud by putting in a solid shift and scoring a goal in the 2-0 victory over Villarreal.
Shortly after signing, Gonzalez said that Simeone had promised him a place in the starting XI right away.
Nico Gonzalez: “I had a dream debut the other day. When Atlético de Madrid comes calling, you don’t hesitate, you don’t think twice. You say yes because it’s one of the best in the world. I want to lift trophies with this shirt.”@RadioestadioN pic.twitter.com/wi4mnhKAXa

He said (via E-Noticias):
“Simeone trusts me, and I know what I’m capable of.
“When he told me I was going to be a starter, I was very happy.”
The Argentine has since not scored for Atletico, but his consistency has made him an integral part of Simeone’s team.
He has played 14 games in LaLiga (starting 12) and has clocked a total of 911 minutes of football. He has earned plaudits for his defensive work rate, intensity in pressing, and attacking intelligence.
Atletico Could Be Forced Into €32m Nico Gonzalez Decision
Diego Simeone admires Nico Gonzalez and may want to keep playing him for the foreseeable future. However, the purchase clause in Gonzalez’s contract has complicated matters for Los Colchoneros.
According to Spanish media, Juventus included a buyout clause in the player’s loan contract. The clause would be automatically triggered if the player participates in a certain number of matches.
So far, Simeone has deployed Gonzalez in 14 LaLiga matches, starting him in 12. If he plays at least 45 minutes in 10 of the remaining 21 LaLiga matches, Atletico would be obligated to buy him for a sizable €32 million fee.

While Atleti hold the player in high regard, they are not sure he is worth that much in the current economy.
Juventus, meanwhile, would benefit greatly if the move goes through. The club from Turin would earn a sizable amount for a player who was not an undisputed starter.
These funds could be crucial as they prepare to secure a place in the Champions League next season.
New coach Luciano Spalletti has received criticism for his safe approach at Juventus. With the Gonzalez funds backing him up, he could sign a player or two more suited to his system without fearing Financial Fair Play sanctions.
Gonzalez’s current deal with the Old Lady runs until June 2029.
