Babayaro Won’t Sign

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp admitted today that Celestine Babayaro was not going to become a Pompey player.

It will be a blow to the Nigerian defender who joined up with the Pompey squad at the start of pre-season. He was hoping to impress enough to gain a contract with the Premier League outfit however the left back isn’t what Pompey are looking for according to Redknapp.

He said, “Unfortunately Babayaro is not what I need, so there won’t be anything going there.”

After recovering from a bout of malaria, the former Chelsea player went on to make two appearances for Pompey, both in Africa. He featured in the 2-1 win against Ajax Cape Town and played 46 minutes against the Kano Pillars.

Although the club have been looking at left sided defenders, Pompey will not follow up their interest in the 29-year-old and will instead look elsewhere as the club prepare to build for a European campaign.
