Burnley sign Chris Eagles

Eagles has been at Manchester United ever since the age of 14. He is a product of the Man Utd youth academy after signing for the youth team of club from Watford in 2000. He signed his first professional contract in 2003, and appeared in his debut match as a 2nd half substitute in the away win against Leeds United on the 28th October 2003. The right-winger is six feet tall and plays as a right-winger.

He has featured mainly for the under 18s and Reserve team in his 5-season professional career at Man Utd, also being loaned out twice to Watford (2005, 2006),  Sheffield Wednesday (2005) and Dutch club NEC Nijmegen (2006-07). Competitively, he only appeared 6 times for Manchester United in which he scored a single goal against Everton on the 28th April 2007. He featured a lot in the club’s South Africa pre-season tour this season, finding the net twice (Kaizer Chiefs and Portsmouth). These performances attracted Championship side Burnley to make a move for the talented right-winger, who is very unlikely to uproot Cristiano Ronaldo from his preferred position in the Man Utd line-up. Although the official fee paid is undisclosed, it is thought to be more than £1 million to secure the player’s signature.

In their summer spending spree, where they landed 5 players, Burnley were delighted to have captured one of their main targets and they have no doubt about his ability and qualities. Burnley manager Owen Coyle said:

“I think it’s fair to say that we have finally landed one of our major targets. I have watched Chris for years and he has always impressed me. He is just a really gifted footballer, so I asked the question a few times and the answer was no all the time.”

“I just kept going back and in the end it has paid off because we have undoubtedly signed a quality player, as he showed recently with Manchester United in South Africa. He is still only 22 and I am sure he has a big future ahead of him.”
