Chelsea Transfer Targets

Although Guus Hiddink has made it clear that come the end of the season he will quit Chelsea and return to Russia to concentrate on his Russian international team, Roman Abramovich has said that he is willing to inject some new players into the Chelsea squad this summer, listening to the advice of Hiddink on what players Chelsea need:

Roman Pavlyuchenko

Hiddink has said to Abramovich that he knows how to optimise the potential of Spurs’ Russian forward, Roman Pavlyuvhenko. Pavlychenko was one of the stars of the unexpectedly successful Russian team which reached the semi-finals of Euro 2008 under the guidance of Chelsea boss Hiddink. His form at the championships led to a £14 million transfer from Spartak Moscow to Tottenham, however he has failed to to justify his large transfer fee so far at Spurs. It is clear that the striker is not part of Harry Redknapp’s plans for the future of Tottenham, and Hiddink believes Chelsea could snap up a quality player for a very reasonable fee.

Yuri Zhirkov

It is believed that the versatile Russian is another target for Chelsea after a strong recommendation from Guus Hiddink. Another star of the Russian Euro 2008 side, Zhirkov is a skillful left-footer who normally plays in midfield, but can play as a forward, or in defense. He is nicknamed ‘The Russian Ronaldinho’ due to his trickery and audacity but as well as being an incredibly creative player, Zhirkov has great pace which he uses to slice defences to shreds. If Zhirkov were to join Chelsea, he would hopefully bring what Florent Malouda has failed to bring to the left wing since his signing from Lyon in July 2007.

Rafael Van der Vaart

Dutch superstar Rafael Van der Vaart has expressed interest in joining Chelsea this summer – if Hiddink stays. The Real Madrid midfielder is clearly unhappy with his current situation at the club and is not on best terms with his manager, Juande Ramos, and has said the following: “If my World Cup selection is threatened I must think about a transfer” after both his form and his number of games for Real Madrid have dropped recently. He would be an excellent acquisition for Chelsea and although only 26 years of age would add significant experience to the team, having earned 65 caps for the Netherlands.
