Brighton Technical Director’s Successes and Flops as He Leaves Club

David Weir has left Brighton and Hove Albion as their technical director after seven years with the club.

The former Rangers, Everton and Scotland defender has been working with the Seagulls since 2018 when he joined initially as their player pathway development manager.

Weir’s role has been overseeing the recruitment strategy at the Amex in recent years after the 55-year-old replaced Dan Ashworth who, at the time, opted to move on to become Newcastle United chief.

Tony Bloom, the Brighton chairman, confirmed the news of Weir’s exit earlier this morning and revealed it was down to the Premier League outfit chasing a fresh leadership and direction.

He said in a statement: “David has served our club very well, but we now wish to refresh our technical area with new leadership and direction.

“I’d like to thank David for everything he has done for us, and to wish him well for the future.”

Why Brighton let David Weir leave

Chief executive Paul Barber will now work in that role while the club hunt for a replacement and he, too, thanked Weir for his years.

“I have greatly enjoyed working with David over the past eight years, and have appreciated his support and hard work throughout this period. I wish David all the best going forward,” he said.

Weir has not been the man to sign players at Brighton specifically over his time as technical director.

According to reports, the Scotsman has instead been overseeing the process in a bid to bring in the right player and type of character. Of course, Weir has been active in the scouting element of the role but the specifics have seemingly been left up to the manager and Barber.

But the retired defender will still have a legacy of players recruited during his tenure with plenty of successes and a couple flops thrown in for good measure.

Albion have been known for their spot on recruitment over the years and Weir has played a significant role in that. Just recently Matt O’Riley went on loan to Marseille for a decent fee but will be brought back after manager Fabian Hurzeler mapped out his future.

One player considered a massive success is Moises Caicedo. The midfielder played 53 times for the club and cost just £25million to join from Independiente.

He would then be sold on for a whopping £115m. That can be considered an excellent piece of business from the club with a massive profit margin.

Another similar story is Joao Pedro who arrived in 2023 from Watford in a £30m deal. He made 70 appearances, scored 30 times and went to Chelsea, like Caicedo, for close to £60m.

Others have come and gone for financially excellent terms including Marc Cucurella, Arsenal signed Ben White, Alexis MacAllister and Yves Bissouma to name just a few. Weir would have had a hand in all of them.

At the other end, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, is one player who cost the club a decent fee but never really delivered before he was shipped off to Feyenoord for a pittance.

Jurgen Locadia also cost around £10m but was binned after multiple loans.

It’s safe to say Brighton have unearthed more gems than have failed, so it remains to be seen where they go from here.
