Goal line technology – We need it!

The England v Germany match today was yet another excuse to get goal line technology into football. A clear goal from Frank Lampard was disallowed, it would have been the goal that would have surely have given England the edge going into the second half.

June 27, 2010 - Bloemfontein, South Africa - epa02226684 England's Frank Lampard takes a shot on the goal during the FIFA World Cup 2010 Round of 16 match between Germany and England at the Free State stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa, 27 June 2010. Germany won 4-1.

The linesmen standing at opposite sides of the goals helped to even spot fouls in the box from both teams and advise the referee on important decisions, but neither officials could have been blamed for missing the crucial decision, the linesman was 19 yards away from the goal line and referee was unsighted.

June 27, 2010 - Bloemfontein, South Africa - epa02226415 Germany's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer tries to save a shot by Frank Lampard during the 2010 FIFA World Cup Round of Sixteen match between Germany and England at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa 27 June 2010.

This isn’t the first time a crucial decision has been made incorrectly, Chelsea suffered in the Champions League, in 2009 against Barcelona, Chelsea were denied four perfectly good penalties. And against Liverpool in 2004, William Gallas cleared the ball clearly off the line but the referee decided that it was a goal. I think unless a new FIFA president is elected we will still have to bare with contentious decisions.
