How Bright Is West Ham United’s Ravel Morrison’s Future?

Yes, I know it’s still early days but at the moment, but one of the stand-out players of the season at the moment is West Ham’s, Ravel Morrison. The West Ham and England youngster has stunned the UK with his abilities on the ball. Off the ball however, it’s a bit of a different story (but let’s not go into that).

Since joining West Ham from Manchester United during January 2012, he had a 1 year loan spell at Birmingham and impressed Lee Clark and his coaching staff. However, he had some problems behind closed doors with his team-mates and coaching staff which had Lee Clark thinking about cancelling his loan spell. All in all, his loan spell was successful and he had caught the eye of many people. The Birmingham Mail’s Sports Editor reported:  ”it wasn’t just his elegant, effortless ability on the ball and passing, but work rate, too”.

He returned to West Ham and many of the fans were looking forward to finally see him in action. He scored his 1st West Ham goal in a League Cup fixture against Cheltenham Town; they came out as 2-1 winners. He scored his first Premier League goal against Everton but West Ham didn’t come out as winners due to two spectacular goals from Leighton Baines and a goal from Romelu Lukaku. From then on he was a bit quiet, getting bullied off the ball rather unfairly (like Jack Wilshere).

Then along came London Derby, Tottenham Hotspur vs. West Ham. As the (rather obvious) underdogs, West Ham played first half out well keeping Spurs at bay. Then came goals from Winston Reid and Ricardo Vaz Te, which both came out of the blue. That had really knocked the stuffing out of Spurs and it was complete West Ham dominance from then on. Then came Ravel’s goal, he picks up the ball just inside the West Ham half after some good play from Mohamed Diame and ran from his own half with Jan Vertonghen on his back and then took the ball past Michael Dawson with ease. The charging Hugo Lloris was then out-smarted by his chip which then (only just) made its way past the goal-line.

I’ll try not to be a biased Arsenal fan but, could Ravel Morrison be the player to lift up the hopes of the West Ham players and fan?! Does anyone remember how influential the 18 year old Jack Wilshere was when he broke into Arsenal’s 1st team? He lifted up the hopes of the players and fans and had a huge impact on the club. I feel Morrison can do the same at West Ham. I think he can push them into the top 10 and help them to a successful cup run. I won’t say if they’ll win anything or not but they could go ‘far’. Think about how excited Andy Carroll is to come back and have Morrison playing behind him… At the moment, I can only see a bright future for West Ham. It’ll be tough for them as they don’t have the strongest of squads.

Of course, like a lot of youngsters, he is one of the big players for the England future. I feel he should have an England first team appearance already but with Wilshere being the only similar player to him in the 1st team I don’t feel like he’ll be a starter for England yet but I hope (I don’t think however) he’ll be in the England squad for Brazil 2014.

Morrison is an outstanding young player and deserves the recognition he’s currently getting. I hope he can bottle up his feelings on the pitch because he WILL give himself a bad name.
