Hreidarsson signs new contract

Fans’ favourite Hermann Hreidarsson has signed a new one-year contract at the club, with the option of a further year if a required amount of games are played.

The news will come as a great delight to the Fratton faithful, with many fans worrying over the lack of squad depth and Pompey’s current inactivity in the transfer market.

The 34-year-old revealed he had the opportunity to move north, with Scottish pair Rangers and Celtic interested in signing the Icelandic star.

Recently relegated Middlesbrough also expressed interest but Hreidarsson revealed he was more than happy to remain at Fratton Park.

He told Morgunbladid, an Icelandic newspaper, ‘Me signing with Portsmouth again was always going to happen even though I had many other options.

‘Me and my family feel great in this place, we have been there for two fun years and I think I have plenty more in me to play in the Premier League and that had a lot to say in this decision.

‘Middlesbrough showed me most interest and also Celtic and Rangers but that did not go as far.’

Hreidarsson’s current contract was due to run out this month, but executive chairman Peter Storrie seems to have been successful in securing one more year from a player much loved by the Portsmouth fans.

Upon speaking of Portsmouth and what they had to say to keep him at the club, Hreidarsson stated, ‘Portsmouth promised me, as far as they could, that they want to strengthen the team for next season and that their goal is to keep doing well in the Premier League’.

Hreidarsson was one of four players offered a new contract for the forthcoming season. Others included Linvoy Primus, Sean Davis and club captain Sol Campbell.

Defender Linvoy Primus is said to have agreed a new one-year contract that will also see him mentor some of the younger players at the club. Peter Storrie revealed recently that Davis is set to leave the club, after rejecting a new three-year contract with improved wage terms.

Although Campbell is yet to officially be offered a new contract, Storrie revealed that talks will be held between both parties once all associated people return from holiday, including Campbell.
