It’s 2009 and The Yanks Have Arrived

Charlie Davies – Striker – #9

Many could argue that 1994 marked the arrival of American soccer onto the global stage as the United States hosted its first FIFA World Cup using nine venues across the nation. Although this would be true if we were constructing a time-line, the United States has not been taken very seriously at the world’s game until this summer. After the memorable 2009 Confederations Cup run by the Yanks, soccer interest, support, and viewing is arguably at its all-time high since the 1994 World Cup. With the USMNT garnering mainstream sports media attention and the rights acquired by ESPN to air two English Premier League games per week, the summer of 2009 could be looked back on as the time when the Yanks truly arrived on the global stage of football.

My name is Rob, and I will be covering anything and everything involved with the United States Men’s National Team here at Blogs FC. I caught the Soccer bug via the 2006 World Cup coverage on ESPN. The virus stayed dormant for a year or two, until completely taking over my body this summer. Naturally, I support the USMNT because they are who I fell in love with first. Following them, I have an “interest” in the following clubs; Rangers FC, Chelsea FC, Tottenham FC, Atletico Madrid, New York Red Bulls, AS Roma, and Watford FC. I am grateful for the opportunity, and hopefully our audience here will grow and we will all enjoy the less than 11 month run-up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. What’s on the schedule, you ask? Well, most importantly, a much needed three points for the Nats against El Salvador in just less than three weeks time on Saturday, September 5th in Salt Lake City, Utah. Between now and then we will take a look back at what we have learned this summer as fall moves in, and we will also look ahead to the next round of qualifying, of course.

One way or the other, I hope you stick around here, as I will try to keep us all entertained between the long breaks of supporting the Yanks. So come on in, the water is fine! Let me know who you are and what you think of this summer, the current squad, or who you favorite player is. But even when you are not reading and commenting on this site, one thing is for certain; The FIFA 2010 World Cup is 296 days away as of today, and The Yanks Are Coming to crash the party.
