Liverpool Make Decision on Marc Guehi Transfer ‘Plan B’

Marc Guehi

Liverpool are still hopeful of landing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Anfield giants are admirers of the England international and would like to bring him in if they can organise an agreement with Palace.

The Eagles know they will likely have to cash-in on their star defender to avoid losing him for nothing next year when his contract expires.

Chairman Steve Parish admitted Guehi is one of the main men who will have to be sold should serious interest be put forward. And the Reds are believed to have done so in recent weeks.

Guehi’s deal runs out in the summer of 2026 and Arne Slot wants him in before that.

Liverpool have no ‘Plan B’ if they don’t sign Marc Guehi

The Dutch manager had been light at centre half having sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for around £35million earlier this window while Joe Gomez has been injured.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed Guehi only wants a move to Liverpool with the former Chelsea player having already made his stance clear.

The defender has played 159 times for Palace since he arrived from Stamford Bridge in 2021 and it is not yet known whether or not manager Oliver Glasner will pick him to play in the club’s Conference League second-leg vs Fredrikstad this week.

But while Liverpool is Guehi’s only desire amid Manchester City and Newcastle United links, the feeling appears to be mutual.

Liverpool, according to The Athletic, do not have a ‘Plan B’ in place if they are unable to convince Palace to part with their £50m-rated star before the window slams shut.

That is not unusual for the Premier League giants who reportedly quite often do not panic buy if their first choice target becomes unavailable.

What Crystal Palace have said about Guehi

Liverpool have already snapped up Parma defender Giovanni Leoni for around £26m to add to their backline and a move for Guehi would allow Slot to have plenty of options to choose from.

Palace know a sale will have to be sanctioned soon to avoid losing their star defender for nothing.

Speaking after Palace’s Community Shield win over Liverpool on Sunday, Parish conceded that a departure this summer is possible as they do not want to lose him on a free next year.

“Yes, of course, for players of that calibre to leave on a free, it is a problem for a football club,” Parish said. “There is no doubt about it, unfortunately. Joachim [Andersen] went [last summer to Fulham], and we couldn’t afford to lose both of them.

“We then had another bid in January, but that was a different situation. We’ll just have to see what happens. It needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.”

The asking price could potentially come down before the end of the window.
