Early on in the match the home side were pressing for the first goal against a young Arsenal. Arsenal kept the clean sheet and scored on the counter attack in the 24th minute.

Arsenal attacked heavily after this goal but missed numrous chances to score, this left alot of pressure in the game with only a 1 goal lead Sunderland pushed for the equaliser missing chances with a good save in injury time by Arsenals goalkeeper.
