Monchi is reportedly closing in on an immediate return to first-team football after his Aston Villa exit.
The Spanish recruitment chief left Villa Park on Monday afternoon in what might have come as a bit of a shock to those outside the club.
It also took the squad and the staff by surprise to learn that the 57-year-old had opted to depart following a relatively short two year stint at the club but it was a decision made following the end of what was a dramatic summer transfer window.
Monchi was replaced by Roberto Olabe who had success with Real Sociedad and who was almost given the opportunity to replace Edu at Arsenal.
But now it leaves Monchi searching for his next role – a hunt that may not take too long if reports emerging this morning are to be believed.
Football Insider claim that Benfica are lining up a swoop to take the talent spotter to Portugal to link up with Jose Mourinho who just rejoined his former club earlier this month.

The same publication claims that the staffer was close to joining Mourinho while the iconic boss was in charge at Fenerbahce but that was a move which never did come to pass.
But now with Monchi unattached having left his role at the English Premier League club, the opportunity seems to have presented itself again to work with The Special One.
It is being reported that Mourinho and Monchi are both represented by super agent Jorge Mendes whose agency, Gestifute, have strong connections inside the Eagles.
And they are hoping to bring both of their clients together to help shape the club and its squad before the next window, the January transfer business, gets underway.
Who replaced Monchi at Aston Villa?
Planning will likely take place soon for the club and that is one reason they will likely want their new man in the door sooner rather than later.
Monchi’s transfer record at Villa has been questioned this season with a less than stellar summer window in the books.
The Villans signed Harvey Elliott on loan from Liverpool while Jadon Sancho struggled to find a club before Villa took a chance on the wantaway Manchester United player.
Not a lot of cash was spent by the Birmingham-based outfit this summer – in the grand scheme of things – with around £25million spent on striker Evann Guessand who is yet to show his true talents.
Monchi’s exit had fans nervous about their manager Unai Emery but it is believed the boss won’t be joining his former staffer in leaving the club.
