Newcastle Push to Sign £50 Million Rated Aston Villa Star as Talks Begin

Newcastle United have revived their interest in Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey, opening talks over a potential deal as the summer transfer window enters its final weeks.

The 24-year-old has just under two years left on his current contract and has so far been unable to agree an extension despite multiple offers from Villa.

Both the player and club are now understood to be open-minded about a sale, which would provide clarity for Villa’s planning and allow Ramsey’s career.

Jacob Ramsey Transfer News: Newcastle Lead Race

Sources indicate that Newcastle have emerged as Ramsey’s preferred destination, with manager Eddie Howe a long-time admirer.

The Magpies attempted to sign the former England youth international in January 2024 and see him as a priority target to strengthen their midfield options.

Discussions between the two clubs are beginning in the build-up to Saturday’s Premier League opener at Villa Park, where the sides will meet in the lunchtime kick-off.

Newcastle are also targeting reinforcements up front and have already added Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale, while a move for Malick Thiaw is close to being done.

Speculation continues over the future of Alexander Isak, who has been blasted over his actions amid Liverpool transfer talks — a saga that could yet influence Newcastle’s spending power in the final weeks of the window.

Although Newcastle are in pole position, West Ham United and clubs abroad have expressed interest.

Hammers head coach Graham Potter is said to admire Ramsey’s game, and the feeling is mutual, but the Tyneside project — and the chance to work under Howe — is thought to hold more appeal.

Do Villa Need to Sell Players?

Villa want to keep Ramsey, who came through their academy, but a sale could help them meet Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) after significant investment in their squad.

The club also missed out on the financial boost of Champions League qualification last season, making player sales a potential route to balance the books.

Ramsey made 19 league starts last season but has battled injuries in recent years, including a broken metatarsal that kept him out for a significant spell.

Still, his technical quality, drive from midfield and versatility have kept him on the radar of several top-flight clubs.

Talks between Newcastle and Villa are expected to continue over the coming days. Any breakthrough would see Ramsey join a growing list of homegrown Premier League talents heading to St James’ Park this summer.
