Italy defender Christian Panucci, the man who scored the winner against Scotland in the qualifying round to the Euro 2008 has sustained an injury in his right knee. This has seen Italy lose two important players before Italy has got off to play in the tournament and luck off the pitch does not seem to be much with Italy.
Panucci is believed to have sustained a minor injury in his right knee ligaments in yesterday’s training session. Panucci fell to the ground during a series of sprints and has been taken to undergo further tests.
Zambrotta would need to switch to right-back with Fabio Grosso playing on the left should Panucci be declared unavailable for Italy’s opener against Holland. A likely partnership of Chiellini and Materazzi would then suit the Italy central defence with Barzagli and Gamberini ready to come on at any moment.
