A candidate for player of the season is perhaps a bit difficult to find this year. It would be hard to single out a player who has played an integral role all season.
However here are a current list of candidates I feel deserve a shout…
Glen Johnson
He is undoubtedly England’s number one right back. He has the potential to play for one of the ‘big four’ with reports in January suggesting Liverpool were considering a £10 million swoop for the former West Ham star. With a somewhat lack of creativity at times this season, Johnson has at some points proved to be our most attacking player on the field. His defending has dramatically improved since he first arrived at the club and in my opinion has been one of the bright sparks of the season.
Peter Crouch
When rejoining the club back in the summer of 2009, it must have been far from Crouch’s mind that Pompey would be entering a relegation battle come the end of the season. However unlike other Premier League stars, Crouch does not have an inflated ego. With all the turmoil that has arisen this season, Crouch has simply gotten on with the job in hand. He is currently the club’s top goal scorer in all competitions, with some of those goals more recently coming from playing as a lone striker. His attitude has been refreshing at times and serves an example to others. He states he feels at home at Pompey, another reason to love that ‘Rodney’.
Hermann ‘The Herminator’
Many were expecting Hermann to pack his bags in the January transfer window and indeed he did, only for Adams to block his move to Rangers/Celtic/Reading at the last minute. It has proved to be an important decision by Adams, one that many Pompey fans will forget. Since returning to the squad Hermann has produced some solid displays at left-back whilst popping up with the odd goal. He has also reignited some of that passion that some fans thought the players had lost. Although not having played the whole season, Hermann might have played an essential role in keeping the club up.
Sean Davis
Although I’m not always a huge fan of Davis, his work rate at times has been fantastic. He’s done his job, simple as. He’s protected the back four whilst marshalling the midfield. Whilst at times he has often mislaid a pass or been criticised for being too defensive he has put in key tackles in other areas. He’s an important player to keep for next season. Yet he is still yet to sign a new contract. However whilst paired with Mullins in central midfield, I do not believe we will see the best of Davis.
David James
Although ‘Jamo’ hasn’t had a fantastic season, compared to previous years, he has remained an essential figure in the squad. He has saved us on countless occasions and still remains England’s number one. More recently Jamo produced a great save to deny Boro’ all three points at the Riverside in the dying seconds. For a relegation battle it is important to have experienced heads and Jamo is just one of many.
Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion on who they think should be player of the season, which is why I am offering those who read this article to put forward their own nominations, including any players that I have missed out.
Play up Pompey!
