Vincent Kompany Addresses Raheem Sterling Bayern Munich Transfer Near Miss

Raheem Sterling was cost a transfer deadline day exit this summer by Chelsea’s own Nicolas Jackson – and now Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany has had his say.

The attacker wanted a move away from Stamford Bridge earlier this month before the window slammed shut and left him in no man’s land.

Sterling has been training alone at 8pm as his exile from the first-team under head coach Enzo Maresca continues.

The playmaker has been forced to work on his own to keep up his fitness levels and that, for the 30-year-old, has come as a shock to the system having spent last term on loan at Arsenal.

Sterling was wanted by Fulham on deadline day but that move could not be agreed upon before the window closed and it was reported previously that the player’s desire to remain in the Premier League has made Chelsea’s efforts to find him a new club more difficult.

His £300,000 plus wages per week were also an issue for interested sides but they did not put off Bayern Munich from making an attempt to sign him with a few days of the window remaining.

Vincent Kompany addresses Bayern Munich interest in Raheem Sterling

According to a report in the Telegraph, Bayern made a play for Sterling during their wait to learn whether or not a deal for Nicolas Jackson would still be doable.

Injury to Liam Delap almost ended that move for the striker before a loan was eventually signed off.

But Bayern made contact over Sterling with Jackson’s future up in the air. Eventually it would work itself out for the Senegalese frontman, but it left Sterling in the lurch.

Now manager Kompany has addressed the interest in the England international and explained how he hopes his former Manchester City star can get his career back on track.

“It’s a tough one because on the one hand I have a lot of respect for Enzo [Maresca] and my colleagues at Chelsea. I understand it’s not easy to make a decision as a coach,” the Belgian said.

“On the other hand, Raheem is one of my former teammates and that bond always remains.”

Could Sterling reignite his Chelsea career?

He added: “It’s funny because last year I had Leroy Sane here as well and those two were devastating in the Premier League when they were part of the team I was part of.

“The only thing I can hope at this age, because he’s still at a good age, is that he can turn it around and show the whole world what his quality is and eventually be in a situation where everything fits for him and he fits for where he is, and hopefully that can happen sometime soon for him and I wish him all the best.”

It was made clear by Maresca last week that Sterling would have no future with the Blues after he was axed.

Discussing the player’s chances of playing again for the club – and the futures of David Datro Fofana and Axel Disasi – the Italian was honest.

He said: “First of all, they are Chelsea players and have contracts with the club, but at this moment they are still training apart.

“Since the start of the season, I haven’t seen them. With us? No.”
