Rodger’s Deadline Day dealings

Watford boss Brendon Rodgers signed Don Cowie and Aleksandrs Cauna on an eventful transfer deadline day at Vicarage Road, which also saw the departure of Moses Ashikodi.

Cowie, bought for a nominal fee from SPL side Inverness Caledonian Thistle, signed a two-and-a-half year deal. Rather more unexpectedly though, Latvian winger Cauna signed on loan until the end of the season from thirteen time Latvian champions Skonto Riga FC.

Moses Ashikodi, who has appeared just twice for the Hornets since joining from Glasgow Rangers, was released by Rodgers and is now a free agent. The striker had spent most of his time out on loan to various clubs including Bradford City, Swindon Town and Hereford United.

Watford add Don Cowie to their squad with the Scotsman having made just over 200 career appearances at Ross County and Inverness. In that time Cowie has managed to net 29 times and it is clear Rodgers is keen on the player as he was willing to pay despite Cowie’s contract expiring this summer.

Rodgers has also added former Chelsea trialist Aleksandrs Cauna. The 21 year old was watched by Rodgers during his time at Stamford Bridge and passed a medical at London Colney yesterday. The Russian-born midfielder has already been capped six times for Latvia and was named Youth Player of the Year in 2006, despite being involved in only half the season.

It was also reported yesterday, that club captain Jay Demerit, could be on his way to fellow relegation rivals Charlton Athetic. Sky Sports News had reported that the Addicks had tabled a bid of £300,000 for the American; however both Watford and Charlton denied any approach for the player.
