Strength of Character the Key

Sheffield United’s 10-man victory against fellow promotion chasers Hull City demonstrated the club’s new found determination and resilience, according to midfielder Gary Speed. The Blades were reduced to ten men when captain Chris Morgan was sent off before half time with the score at 0-0, but a brilliant Stephen Quinn volley and another penalty from the unstoppable James Beattie handed United a priceless three points towards their improbable but by no means impossible mission of reaching the Play-Off positions.

"It was a great three points," Speed said. "We knew it would be a tough game and to win after Morgs was sent off typifies the character within the club.

"We were very positive in the dressing-room at the interval and our second-half performance was nothing sort of tremendous."

Speed is now expected to fill in as captain in United’s remaining two games, at home to Bristol City and away at Southampton, as Morgan will now serve a two-match suspension. Normally his two yellow cards would only constitute a one-game ban, but as the combative defender has already been sent off this season he will sit out the rest of the season unless United are successful in claiming the last play-off birth.
