Sunderland have announced that midfielder Dan Neil has joined Championship promotion chasers Ipswich Town on a loan deal until the end of the season, when he will leave the Black Cats.
The move marks an emotional moment for Neil, who captained Sunderland to a dramatic victory in the Championship play-off final last May.
The boyhood Sunderland fan made his debut for the club in 2018, and went on to make 201 appearances for the Wearside club.
The former captain played a pivotal role in Sunderland’s rise to the Premier League, with the Black Cats initially in League One when he first broke into the side.
The move will come as a boost to Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich, who are looking to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking after being relegated to the Championship last season.
We can today confirm the departure of long-serving midfielder Dan Neil.
Neil has joined Ipswich Town on loan until the end of the season, ending his 18-year association with Sunderland at the end of his contract in June.

Sunderland pays tribute to Dan Neil’s ‘legacy’
Having played such an important role in Sunderland’s recent revival from being relegation candidates, the Black Cats did not let the 24-year-old go quietly.
On their club website, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “He always stood up during difficult times and embraced the challenge, pushed to be an important player, and then used his influence positively to drive standards on and off the field, which culminated in him captaining his boyhood club back to the Premier League.”
Neil excited for ‘new chapter’ at Ipswich
The emotions were bittersweet for the Sunderland man, although Neil was excited at the prospect of regular football after finding his game time limited in the Premier League this season.
In a post on Ipswich’s club website, the 24-year-old said: “I’ve been at Sunderland for a very long time and it was an unbelievable chapter in my life and career but I’m ready for the next chapter now.”
Despite being relegated from the Premier League last season, the Tractor Boys caught the eye with their performances under a limited budget.
Neil is looking forward to playing under Mckenna, who’s style of play has caught the eye of Crystal Palace recently.
“After a lot of thought, it was clear Ipswich would be the perfect fit for that”, Neil said.
“The way the manager wants to play football and the way I like to play is the same, basically.”
