Chelsea To Miss Out On Key Transfer Target As Premier League Rivals Secure Deal

Chelsea are set to miss out on midfield transfer target Douglas Luiz, who is set to re-join former club Aston Villa.

Brazilian international Luiz, 27, joined Juventus from Villa in 2024.

But he has now agreed to re-join Unai Emery’s side on loan until the end of the season.

Luiz turned down offers from La Liga, and last week it was reported that Chelsea were seriously interested.

After a disappointing season in Italy, he has been on loan at Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

But having made just 14 appearances and struggling with injury, Luiz has been looking for a move.

Chelsea were believed to have wanted to sign Luiz as cover for injured pair Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo.

They will have to look elsewhere now, though, with the Brazilian no longer an option.

Chelsea Lose Out To Aston Villa On Douglas Luiz Transfer

Liam Rosenior isn’t the only manager dealing with a midfield crisis this season.

Aston Villa’s issues have forced Unai Emery into the transfer market.

Boubacar Kamara’a injury has ruled the midfielder out for the season, while John McGinn and Youri Tielemans are also out with long-term problems.

Luiz is therefore seen by Villa as the perfect solution to their problems.

He has made it clear that he wishes to return to Villa Park, turning down Chelsea’s interest.

Villa’s initial loan move will include an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

Luiz made more than 200 appearances in his first stint at Villa between 2019 and 2024.

Chelsea Boss Liam Rosenior Reaffirms Transfer Policy

While they will be disappointed to miss out on Douglas Luiz, Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior will not rush into making signings.

The new head coach has made clear that Chelsea will only bring in players who improve his squad.

Chelsea have been accused of panic signings under owner Todd Boehly, and have spent more than £1 billion on transfers since the American businessman took over.

But Rosenior’s stance seems to reflect and more pragmatic approach.

Discussing interest in Luiz, he highlighted the quality already available to him.

“In terms of my midfield options, you’ve got Enzo [Fernandez], Moi [Moises Caicedo], Andrey Santos, Reece James. It’s not bad,” he explained.

“I’ve been really clear on this: I don’t want to bring in players that don’t enhance the group or the chemistry that we’re building.

“So we have to be very selective at this stage of the season. If we do bring in the right player in a certain position, they have to have a clear impact on the team.”
