Giovanni Trappatoni the former Italy coach who had unsuccessful reign with the Azzuri after getting knocked out against South Korea in that famous debatable match in the 2002 World Cup and then not even making it past the group stage of the Euro 2004, has spoken about Italy’s chances in Euro 2008. The current Ireland coach believes that adding to the fact that Italy were pinned in the so called Group of Death, Fabio Cannavaro’s exclusion will add woes to Italy’s chances. He is also sceptic about Italy’s chances of gaining a ‘double’ after winning the World Cup two years ago.
“Germany, Italy, France and Holland are the most prestigious teams at Euro 2008,†Trapattoni said on Politica nel Pallone.
“I don’t know whether the Azzurri will be able to build on the success of the World Cup.
“History says that it’s difficult for teams to repeat their triumphs and there are lots of little factors that get involved. For one, they have the Group of Death.â€
Trappatoni then spoke about current Italy Manager Roberto Donadoni.
“What do I think of Donadoni’s choices? He has had the usual dilemmas that come with having the many blessings we have in Italy,†he explained.
“With Luca Toni, Alessandro Del Piero, Antonio Cassano, Antonio Di Natale and Mauro Camoranesi all playing similar roles, it is tough to make these decisions.
“Donadoni has had lots of time to think and I am certain that he will do the right things.â€
