17: Nigel de Jong

Nigel de Jong is 23 years old and he plays as a defensive midfielder or right wing-back for Hamburger SV in the number 8 shirt. He was born in Amsterdam on the 30th November 1984, and is 1.74 metres tall and weighs 73 kilograms. In his football career he played for two teams. He started in the youth academy of Ajax in 1993 and signed a professional contract with the club in 2002. Then, he moved to Hamburg in the 2006 January transfer window. Last season, he helped his team classify 4th in the Bundesliga with 54 points, meaning that he will be playing in the UEFA Cup in 2008/09.

 

De Jong made his international senior debut for Holland on the 31st March 2004 in a friendly match against France. He did not make the final Euro 2004 squad, and missed World Cup 2006 due to a knee injury. He appeared 3 times for Holland in Euro 2008, missing the game against Romania. He played well against Italy and France, but failed to impress in the game against Russia, in which Holland were eliminated. He wore the number 17 shirt. Until today, he has earned 27 caps for his home nation, and at a relatively young age, he is set to continue adding to this number in the future.
