Celtic had a miserable transfer deadline day yesterday and arguably came out worse off than they went in.
The Hoops had been determined to bring in two strikers and the same number of wingers on the final day of the window.
That was after a slow and weary crawl towards the end of the market where only £3million had been spent on incomings despite having cash in the bank.
Manager Brendan Rodgers had made it clear that he felt the squad needed a refresh and a number of attacking players coming in before last night’s 11pm deadline.
Adam Idah was also sold to Swansea City for a fee close to £7m and that meant a bigger rush for attacking reinforcements.
However, as the clock ticked down, Celtic did not land their priority target Kasper Dolberg who opted to leave for Ajax instead.
Kelechi Iheanacho in talks with Celtic
It left the Scottish Premiership holders scrambling and when their loan option, David Datro Fofana snubbed them for a Charlton switch – which would eventually collapse – Celts had no time to make any other moves.
They did land winger Sebastian Tounekti, but that was not enough.
Fans were livid and threatening to ditch their Europa League ticket packages but the club turned their attention towards the freebie market and now they look to land a striker after all.
Former Rodgers attacker at Leicester City, Kelechi Iheanacho, is now on the verge of making a move to Glasgow with Celtic having had his Sevilla contract ripped up in the late hours of Monday night.
Again, the support were left underwhelmed by the prospect of the 28-year-old arriving for nothing. But that may be because the forward had the opportunity to make the move back in January.
However, instead of choosing Parkhead to play his football, the Nigerian international opted to make a loan move from La Liga to Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship.
Iheanacho’s scoring record for Middlesbrough and Sevilla
The player managed only one goal in the 15 appearances he made for Boro in that time which has to go down as a flop of a move for both club and player.
At parent club Sevilla before he made the switch to the Riverside it was not much better for the player.
In 11 matches since his move from Leicester, he only found the back of the net three times.
Rodgers may yet be the man to get Iheanacho fit and firing again in Scotland. At the King Power Stadium he scored 61 times and, alongside the Northern Irishman, the pair lifted the FA Cup together in 2021.
