Barcelona claimed a thrilling win over Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana on Sunday night, winning the first trophy of the 2025/26 season.
It was Barca’s fourth trophy under Hansi Flick, following the LaLiga title, the Supercopa de Espana, and the Copa del Rey wins last season.
They have now won a record-extending 16 Spanish Super Cups, three more than Los Blancos in second.
A Historic Clash Between Barcelona and Real Madrid
Barcelona’s historic win over Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final meant they went into the final as the favourites. That confidence shone through as the Blaugrana dominated the opening spell of the game.
Having squandered a golden opportunity only minutes prior, Raphinha fired Hansi Flick’s side into the lead in the 36th minute. The Brazilian applied a clinical finish from the left of the box to send the ball into the bottom-right corner.
In the first half stoppage time, Real Madrid equalised through an outrageous solo goal from Vinicius Jr. It was the Brazilian’s first Real Madrid goal in 17 games for Los Blancos.
Vinicius and Madrid’s joy only lasted for a few moments, as Robert Lewandowski lobbed the ball past Courtois, making it 2-1 for the Catalans.

Real Madrid equalised again, against the run of play, a couple of minutes later. Gonzalo Garcia poked the ball in from close range to make it 2-2 at the King Abdullah Sports City.
It was the first time that three goals had been scored in first-half injury time in any El Clasico in the 21st century.
Raphinha ensured Barcelona had the last laugh, as his ambitious strike in the 73rd minute took a deflection off Raul Asencio and beat Courtois. He is now only the second player, after Aritz Aduriz, to score four goals in a Super Cup campaign.
Real Madrid had two great opportunities to equalise at the death. However, both Alvaro Carreras and Asencio directed their efforts straight at the goalkeeper.
Barcelona’s Unprecedented Final Streak Over Real Madrid
Barcelona have now beaten Real Madrid in five of their last six meetings in all competitions. Los Blancos’ only victory came earlier this season in LaLiga.
Barcelona have also beaten Madrid in three consecutive finals for the first time in history.
In January 2025, Barcelona beat Real Madrid 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final. Later in April, the Catalans claimed a 3-2 win over the club from the Spanish capital in the Copa del Rey final.
However, Real Madrid still lead Barcelona in their all-time head-to-head in finals.

Sunday’s win not only gave Barca a significant psychological boost for the rest of the season, but it also allowed them to secure record-breaking 2026 Spanish Super Cup prize money.
The additional revenue could help them greatly as they prepare to bolster their squad in the summer.
