James Garner has committed his future to Everton, agreeing a new long-term contract at Merseyside.
It comes as a huge relief for Toffees fans, finally ending months of uncertainty around one of the club’s standout performers this season.
The 24-year-old midfielder had been attracting attention from several clubs in January, with Manchester United and AC Milan both keeping close tabs on his situation.
Everton, though, have moved decisively to secure one of David Moyes’ most important players.
James Garner new Everton contract
Garner’s existing deal was due to expire in the summer, making renewal a priority for Everton’s hierarchy.
Talks have progressed quickly in recent weeks and an agreement has now been reached on improved, long-term terms at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The new contract effectively shuts the door on interest from elsewhere, with Everton determined to keep arguably their best player this season.
Garner joined the Toffees from Manchester United in 2022 and has since made over 100 appearances for the club, developing into a central figure in midfield.
Manchester United James Garner interest
Manchester United had been monitoring Garner’s progress closely, with his form inevitably catching the eye at Old Trafford.
AC Milan also made a surprise move earlier this month, sounding out the possibility of a January approach.
Everton have rebuffed that interest by securing Garner’s signature, removing the risk of losing him at a cut price later in the year.
Moyes has been consistent in his stance that the midfielder is central to his plans.
James Garner’s impact under David Moyes
Garner has been Everton’s most consistent performer this season, playing all 22 league games. He has mainly dictated games from midfield but has also filled in at right-back.
His display in the recent 1-0 win over Aston Villa earned him another man-of-the-match award with England head coach Thomas Tuchel watching on.
Earlier in the campaign, he produced a complete midfield performance in the 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, scoring and assisting, as well as putting in a shift defensively.
Those displays have put him in the conversation for a place in Tuchel’s World Cup squad as a player capable of contributing at both ends of the pitch.
Moyes has also trusted Garner in multiple roles, including spells at full-back when injuries have bitten, further highlighting his value to the squad.
England hopes and Everton’s European push
Sitting just two points behind sixth-placed Chelsea, Everton are still in contention for European qualification.
They are actively exploring the market to in a bid to strengthen their squad, and are believed to have made an offer for ex-Arsenal star Brooke Norton-Cuffy.
Garner’s influence and consistency have already placed him on the fringes of England consideration, but for now the focus remains firmly on club matters.
Leeds United are next up in the Premier League, and with his future settled, Garner can concentrate solely on performances on the pitch rather than speculation off it.
For Everton, tying down one of their best players represents a significant statement of intent as they look to build momentum under Moyes.
