Why Raheem Sterling Joining Tottenham Would Make Premier League History

Multiple reports claim that Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for Raheem Sterling in a transfer that would make Premier League history.

Sterling is available on a free transfer after leaving Chelsea earlier this week following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract 18 months before it was due to expire.

The 31-year-old was earning £325,000 per week at Stamford Bridge and recently featured in the highest-paid Premier League XI of 2026.

Sterling will earn a significantly lower wage at his next club, although his next destination is not yet clear.

Tottenham, Napoli and Juventus have all been credited with an interest in Sterling, who has made 396 Premier League appearances to date.

The first 95 of those appearances came for Liverpool, before he racked up 225 more during seven seasons at Manchester City. Sterling scored 14 goals in 59 top-flight games for Chelsea. He then featured in 17 Premier League matches during a loan spell at Arsenal last season.

Raheem Sterling to join yet another Big Six club?

Sterling is one of only two players to have played in the Premier League for four so-called Big Six clubs.

The only two Big Six clubs Sterling has not yet represented are Tottenham and Manchester United.

Nicolas Anelka also played in the Premier League for Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal — albeit in a different order.

But were Sterling to join Spurs then he would make Premier League history as the first ever player to turn out for five members of the Big Six.

Jamie O’Hara wants Spurs to sign Raheem Sterling

Some Tottenham fans might be put off by the fact that Sterling has not played a competitive game of football since May.

Many others may feel a tad uneasy about the prospect of signing a player who has previously worn the shirt of their two biggest rivals.

However, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara would be very happy to see Sterling continue his exclusively Big Six career in N17.

“I would have him at Tottenham,” said O’Hara, who now works as a radio presenter for talkSPORT. “I would absolutely take Sterling at Tottenham. I think he’s a good player. He’s better than what we’ve got.”

O’Hara, who represented Arsenal at youth level before making 34 Premier League appearances for Spurs between 2007 and 2009, added: “I’d sign him on a contract to the end of the season if he was willing to do that.

“I don’t know what other offers he’s got in terms of, he might have a long-term contract in Saudi offering him loads of money.

“But if the candle is still lit and he wants to still be a Premier League football player I would give him an opportunity at Tottenham.”
