Everton are making a late move to sign SC Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl before the transfer window closes.
The 23-year-old has been on the Toffees’ radar throughout the summer, and with David Moyes pushing for one more midfield addition, talks have now accelerated in the final hours of deadline day.
According to Indykaila News, Everton have already spoken with Rohl’s representatives, and if an agreement is struck with Freiburg, a medical could take place as soon as 1 September.
How much will Everton pay for Rohl?
Everton are believed to be weighing up a fee in the region of £15–18 million for the Germany Under-21 international.
While Freiburg are reluctant to lose Rohl so late in the window, Everton remain hopeful that their urgency and willingness to back Moyes with reinforcements will push a deal over the line.
This would mark another statement of intent under new owners The Friedkin Group, who are determined to provide Moyes with the squad depth he needs.
Having already seen Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish make a huge impact since arriving, Rohl would represent a smart, youthful addition to complement Everton’s midfield options.
Who is Merlin Rohl?
Rohl began his career at FC Ingolstadt 04 before joining Freiburg in 2022. Since then, he has made 48 Bundesliga appearances, contributing two goals and six assists.
He has also been capped 13 times by Germany’s Under-21 side, and a switch to the Premier League could accelerate his chances of a full international call-up.
His main strengths lie in his pace and ability to burst into space over short distances, making him a useful outlet in transition. He is technically gifted, comfortable on the ball, and confident when dribbling in tight areas.
His balance and agility also allow him to change direction quickly under pressure, making him a difficult player to dispossess.
However, he has limited experience outside of Germany and is still adapting at top-flight level, which could present a challenge in the Premier League.
Everton have enjoyed three consecutive wins heading into deadline day, but Moyes has been vocal about needing another midfielder to stabilise his system.
With the clock ticking down towards the 19:00 cut-off, the Toffees view Rohl as the type of player who could bring composure, ball progression and youthful energy to their midfield.
The Toffees may only be one or two signings away from making a genuine step forward this season, and Everton chiefs are determined to avoid leaving Moyes short of options.
