Villa were again unable to break their hoodoo against the Old Trafford side.
They never really came close. Some early chances were squandered and then United began to turn the screw. A Bouma mistake allowed Christiano Ronaldo to cheekily flick the ball with the outside of his boot past the despairing Carson. Soon after it was 2-0, Ronaldo had time on the right to pinpoint an inch perfect cross to an unmarked Tevez at the back post who coolly headed home.
Matters weren’t helped for Villa when John Carew had to come off injured to be replaced by Maloney. Villa were already short on numbers and having to play Nigel Reo-Coker on the right due to the inconsistency of Zat Knight.
Maloney wasted a good chance after half time, but a Wayne Rooney double secured a comfortable win for the home side. A correct offside call prevented the youngster his hat-trick.
Villa looked out of sorts and short on confidence, games against Bolton and Derby should ease the pain of a third straight loss.
The wait for victory over United continues for another season at least.
