Manchester United resume their defense of the league title at the weekend when they take on a flu stricken Blackburn side in their first premier league game since the 2-0 defeat at anfield. United are going into the match with confidence after beating Barnsley 2-0 in the carling cup. On paper this fixture looks easy on paper but as Fulham proved in March of last season, anything can happen in the premier league.
With rovers only having three successes so far this season, the northern Lancashire side haven’t had a good start to the season by conceding fifth teen goals in the last four games. Although the riversiders will be going into the game with confidence due to a win last time out, Sam Allardyce’s men will still have last week’s defeat on their mind when they were taken apart by league leaders Chelsea losing 5-0. The red devils will also go into the game with confidence as they have won eleven of the last fifth teen league encounters with the rovers and Ferguson’s men will be looking to bounce back from their league defeat against Liverpool last Sunday.
The rovers have recently been struck by swine flu with Christopher Samba, Jason Roberts likely to be out with the virus but striker David Dunne looks to have shaken the virus off after coming on as seventy minute substitute in riversiders Carling cup tie against Peter borough. The other doubts for the game are Pascal Chimbonda (calf) and Vince Grella (thigh) and on loan striker Franco Di Santo who was ineligible to play against parent club Chelsea last week, should come straight back into the line up with Dunne up front. United have also been hit by injuries with Darren Fletcher (Groin),Danny Welbeck(knee) and Park Ji-Sung(knee) defiantly the out and Rio Ferdinand(calf), Nemanja Vidic(calf) and Ryan Giggs(knee) all doubts and Gary Neville is defiantly out due to being dismissed in the Carling cup tie with Barnsley. New summer signing, Gabriel Obertan, Could Make his Premier League Debut on Saturday. Other New signing Micheal Owen could start above Dimitar Berbatov as he performed well in mid-week.
Man Utd: Van der Sar, O’Shea, Evans, Brown, Evra, Nani, Anderson, Carrick, Valencia, Owen, Rooney.
Blackburn: Robinson, Salgado, Nelsen, Givet, Olsson, Emerton, N’Zonzi, Andrews, Pedersen, Dunn, Di Santo.
The rover’s star man is by far David Dunne, having scored five goals in eight games just behind the top scoring strikers. There was a doubt for the striker because of recent douse of the flu which was scheduled to keep him out but a late appearance in the rovers last Carling cup game against Peter borough in mid-week is likely to put him back in contention.
The referee for United against Blackburn is Phil Dowd whos last game in charge of United was 2-0 defeat to Fulham in March of last year, in which he sent off Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney.
